1. Our Commitment
PhotoPass Inc. ("PhotoPass," "we," "us," or "our") is committed to ensuring that our passport photo, visa photo, and ID photo services are accessible to people of all abilities, including those with visual, auditory, motor, cognitive, and other disabilities.
We believe that everyone deserves equal access to essential identity documentation services. Our accessibility efforts are guided by the principles of perceivability, operability, understandability, and robustness — the four pillars of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
💡 We actively work to maintain and improve accessibility. This statement documents our current status, features, known limitations, and ongoing improvement plan.
2. Conformance Status
PhotoPass strives to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines, developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), define requirements for making web content more accessible to people with disabilities.
Our current conformance status:
- Target Standard: WCAG 2.1 Level AA
- Overall Compliance: Substantially conformant with WCAG 2.1 AA. We have conducted internal testing and addressed the majority of success criteria. A small number of areas are under active remediation (see Section 8).
- Evaluation Methods: Automated testing tools, manual keyboard and screen reader testing, colour contrast analysis, and periodic external accessibility audits.
- Last External Audit: November 2025, conducted by an independent accessibility consultancy.
We also aim to comply with relevant legislation, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act (United States), the Equality Act 2010 (United Kingdom), and the European Accessibility Act (EAA).
3. Accessibility Features
PhotoPass includes the following features designed to improve accessibility for all users:
- Skip Navigation Link: A "Skip to main content" link is available at the top of every page, allowing keyboard and screen reader users to bypass repetitive navigation.
- Semantic HTML Structure: Pages use proper heading hierarchies (h1-h4), landmark roles (banner, navigation, main, complementary, contentinfo), and semantic elements to provide clear document structure.
- ARIA Labels and Descriptions: Interactive elements, form controls, and dynamic content include appropriate ARIA attributes to communicate state, purpose, and functionality to assistive technologies.
- Descriptive Link Text: Links include meaningful text that describes their purpose and destination, avoiding generic phrases like "click here" or "read more."
- Alternative Text for Images: All informative images include descriptive alt text. Decorative images are marked with empty alt attributes or aria-hidden="true" to avoid cluttering screen reader output.
- Form Labels & Error Messages: All form inputs have associated labels. Error messages are descriptive, clearly linked to the relevant field, and communicated to assistive technology.
- Focus Indicators: A clearly visible focus ring appears around the currently focused element when navigating by keyboard.
- Responsive Design: The interface adapts to different screen sizes and zoom levels (up to 200%) without loss of content or functionality.
- Accessible Off-Canvas Menu: The mobile navigation menu is fully keyboard-operable, with proper focus management and ARIA state announcements.
- FAQ Accordion: Expandable FAQ sections announce their expanded/collapsed state to screen readers and are operable by keyboard.
4. Keyboard Navigation
PhotoPass is designed to be fully operable using only a keyboard, without requiring a mouse or touch input. This is essential for users with motor disabilities, repetitive strain injuries, and those who rely on alternative input devices.
Key keyboard accessibility features include:
- Tab Navigation: Users can navigate through all interactive elements using the Tab key (forward) and Shift+Tab (backward) in a logical order that follows the visual layout.
- Visible Focus Indicator: A prominent blue outline appears around the currently focused element, making it easy to track keyboard position on the page.
- Skip Link: The first focusable element on every page is a "Skip to main content" link, allowing users to bypass the header and navigation.
- Interactive Elements: Buttons, links, form fields, select menus, and FAQ accordion toggles are all operable by keyboard using standard keystrokes (Enter, Space, arrow keys as appropriate).
- Off-Canvas Menu: The mobile menu can be opened, navigated, and closed entirely by keyboard, with focus trapped within the menu when it is open.
- No Keyboard Traps: There are no situations where keyboard focus becomes trapped in a component without a clear escape mechanism.
5. Screen Reader & Assistive Technology
PhotoPass is built to work effectively with screen readers and other assistive technologies. We test compatibility with:
- Screen Readers: NVDA (Windows), JAWS (Windows), VoiceOver (macOS and iOS), and TalkBack (Android)
- Browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge (latest versions)
- Operating Systems: Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android
Our screen reader support includes:
- Page Landmarks: ARIA landmark roles (banner, navigation, main, complementary, contentinfo) allow screen reader users to quickly jump between page sections.
- Heading Navigation: A logical heading structure enables efficient navigation by heading level.
- Dynamic Content Updates: When content changes dynamically (e.g., FAQ accordion state, form submission feedback), appropriate ARIA live regions announce these changes to screen readers.
- Form Validation: Error messages and validation feedback are communicated to screen readers in real-time as users interact with forms.
- Button and Link Descriptions: All interactive elements have accessible names that clearly describe their action or destination.
6. Visual Design & Colour Contrast
Our visual design considers the needs of users with low vision, colour blindness, and other visual impairments:
- Colour Contrast: All text meets or exceeds the WCAG 2.1 AA contrast ratio requirements — at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18px bold or 24px regular). Key interface elements and interactive components also meet contrast requirements.
- Colour Independence: Information is never conveyed by colour alone. Error states, required fields, and other indicators always include text labels or icons in addition to colour coding.
- Text Resizing: The interface supports browser text resizing and zoom up to 200% without loss of content, functionality, or visual clarity.
- Responsive Layout: Content reflows to fit different screen sizes and orientations without requiring horizontal scrolling at common viewport widths.
- Focus Visibility: The keyboard focus indicator provides sufficient contrast against all backgrounds, making it visible to users with low vision.
7. Content & Structure
We structure our content to be clear, predictable, and easy to navigate:
- Consistent Navigation: The main navigation menu appears in the same location on every page, with consistent link ordering and behaviour.
- Descriptive Page Titles: Every page has a unique, descriptive title that clearly identifies its purpose and content.
- Language Declaration: The primary language of each page is declared in the HTML, enabling screen readers to use the correct pronunciation and Braille translation tables.
- Readable Content: We use clear, plain language with a reading level appropriate for a broad audience. Technical terms are explained where necessary.
- Breadcrumb Navigation: Breadcrumb trails on sub-pages provide additional orientation and navigation context.
- Table of Contents: Long-form pages (like this one) include a linked table of contents for efficient navigation to specific sections.
8. Known Limitations
Despite our best efforts, there are some areas where we are actively working to improve accessibility:
- Photo Upload Widget: The drag-and-drop photo upload functionality currently relies on mouse or touch interaction. We are developing a fully keyboard-accessible alternative for users who cannot use drag-and-drop, expected to be released in Q1 2026. In the interim, a standard file upload button is available as a fallback.
- AI Feedback Visuals: Some AI-generated photo feedback uses visual indicators (highlighted areas on the photo) to show detected issues. We are working on equivalent text-based descriptions for screen reader users.
- Older PDF Resources: A small number of older downloadable guides may not be fully tagged for accessibility. We are systematically reviewing and updating these documents.
- Third-Party Video Content: Some embedded tutorial videos from third-party platforms may lack accurate captions or audio descriptions. We are working with content partners to improve this.
If you encounter an accessibility barrier not listed here, please contact us — we will prioritise investigating and addressing it.
9. Ongoing Improvement
Accessibility is not a one-time project — it is an ongoing commitment. Our approach to continuous improvement includes:
- Regular Audits: We conduct internal accessibility testing with every major release and commission external audits annually.
- Automated Monitoring: Automated accessibility testing tools are integrated into our development pipeline to catch issues before they reach production.
- Team Training: All PhotoPass designers, developers, and content creators receive accessibility training as part of their onboarding and ongoing professional development.
- User Feedback: We actively encourage and review accessibility feedback from our users. Every report is investigated and tracked through to resolution.
- Accessibility Roadmap: We maintain a publicly visible roadmap of planned accessibility improvements, prioritised based on impact and user feedback.
10. Third-Party Content
Some areas of our website may include third-party content or integrations, such as:
- Payment Processing: Our payment pages are served by a PCI-DSS compliant third-party processor. While we select partners who prioritise accessibility, some elements of the payment interface are outside our direct control.
- Social Media Embeds: Any embedded social media content is subject to the accessibility policies of the respective platform.
- External Links: Links to third-party websites (e.g., government passport office websites for reference) lead to content that is not under our control.
We are not responsible for the accessibility of third-party content, but we strive to work with partners who share our commitment to inclusive design.
